Xi receives Lavrov, axis between China and Russia against Washington

AGI – The Chinese president Xi Jinping received the Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, at the conclusion of his two-day visit to Beijing. The meeting between Xi and Lavrov took place after a press conference in which the head of Kremlin diplomacy and his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, gave a summary of yesterday’s official talks, which addressed topics such as the conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza. The two ministers agreed that relations between Beijing and Moscow have strengthened, agreed on their positions on key global geopolitical challenges and stressed that both countries will fight “hegemonic and intimidating behavior”, an explicit reference to the United States. According to Chinese media, Lavrov has prepared the ground for a mission to China Vladimir Putin. The Russian president’s first foreign trip after re-election is expected to take place next month.

Wang and Lavrov reiterated the importance of a truce in the Middle East and their support for the creation of a Palestinian state. During the joint press conference at the end of the bilateral meeting, Wang said that the recent UN Security Council resolution on the ceasefire in Gaza, which the United States did not veto, was “binding” and ” mandatory”. China’s foreign minister called for “support for the Palestinian nation in establishing a state” so that “a Jewish nation and an Arab nation can coexist peacefully.”

“China will support Russia’s stable development under Putin’s leadership. Beijing and Moscow will continue to strengthen strategic cooperation on the world stage and provide each other with strong support,” China’s top diplomat said. Lavrov, for his part, branded the international meetings on the war in Ukraine as “useless”, which do not take Moscow’s interests into account and only promote Kiev’s peace proposal. “We and our Chinese friends clearly state the need to take into account the legitimate concerns of all parties involved, mainly in the security sector. In this context, we, together with our Chinese colleagues, confirmed the conclusion that any international event is futile : not only do they not take Russia’s position into account, but they completely ignore them by promoting the so-called “peace formula” of Volodymyr Zelensky’s absolutely empty ultimatum and are therefore completely divorced from reality,” the Russian minister said at the press conference in Beijing .

Finally, Lavrov recalled that the West “is applying illegal sanctions against a number of states, including obviously Russia”, and added that “this policy is also starting to be actively applied towards China”.
