Havana syndrome, accusations against Russia: that’s what it is

Symptoms of Havana syndrome

This health disorder, reported for the first time by some officials of the US embassy in Havana, the capital of Cuba, in 2016, and, for this very reason commonly referred to as “Havana syndrome”, causes migraines, nausea, of memory and dizziness. The “Havana syndrome” would therefore be a mysterious ultrasound-based weapon that would produce brain damage and serious permanent injuries.

As for the first case in 2016, when some US diplomats who were in Havana reported that they had become ill after hearing piercing sounds during the night, the suspicion already arose that it could be an attack conducted by a foreign entity with the aid of an unspecified sonar weapon.

Symptoms such as nosebleeds, headaches and vision problems were later reported by staff at US embassies in China, Europe and Washington. According to this latest investigation, the diplomats may have been targeted with Russian sonic weapons. The year-long investigation “uncovered evidence suggesting that unexplained anomalous medical incidents, also known as Havana Syndrome, may have their origins in the use of directed energy weapons by members of the (Russian) Unit GRU) 29155”, is the conclusion of the journalistic investigation.

The revelation that disproves the Pentagon’s conclusions

The Russian investigative group Insider and Der Spiegel presented an investigation on the topic on the US broadcaster’s 60 minutes program CBS: the results would lead to Moscow, to intelligence unit 29155. The new revelations would therefore contradict the previous investigation conducted by the Pentagon and concluded in 2023 on the mysterious phenomenon, in which the result was reached that it was “very unlikely” that behind there was a foreign power behind the alleged invisible weapon.

The accusations against Russia

According to “The Insider”, however, Russian members of a GRU unit known as 29155 were present in several places where cases of “Havana syndrome” occurred involving US personnel, considered “top performers”. . “There was constantly a nexus with Russia, there was a point where everyone had worked against Russia, or focused on Russia, and had done it extremely well,” the investigation highlights.

A ‘fil rouge’ also confirmed by Mark Zaid, a lawyer who represents over twenty victims, including members of the CIA, the FBI and the State Department, who have reported the various symptoms of the syndrome: migraine, nausea, dizziness, vomiting memory loss, blurred vision, ringing in the ears, hearing loss, difficulty speaking. “The only common thread among most, if not all, of my clients, other than family members connected to the employee, was that they were all doing something related to Russia,” he says. Furthermore, the investigation reports other probable attacks as early as 2014 on the US consulate in Frankfurt

“Unfortunately, I cannot be more specific, because this is classified material. But I can tell you that from the early stages I started looking in the direction of Moscow,” he told the CBS Greg Edgreen, one of the investigators who authored the first investigation, a former US officer serving at the Pentagon.

Edgreen also recalls that the burden of proof on the guilty was raised to very high levels and in 2023 no conclusions were reached: we did not want to be faced with unpleasant truths. While, according to Insider’s investigation, the key to the link with Russian intelligence would be Vitaly Kovalev, a Russian chef arrested for dangerous driving in a car in Florida in 2020 and who would have been recognized as a Russian spy, according to what was discovered by a FBI agent, named Carrie, who was the victim of the mysterious “sonic” weapon. A device capable of erasing the vehicle’s computerized data, including GPS tracking, was also found in the Russian chef’s car. Kovalev, who had studied at a military institute, learning radio electronics, and who suddenly became a chef in New York and Washington, returned to Russia after 30 months in prison and officially died on the front in Ukraine.

A link with the Russian 007s (who allegedly received promotions or awards for the development of “non-lethal acoustic weapons”) was also found by Insider’s Russian investigative journalist Christo Grozev, Bulgarian journalist head of the Bellingcat investigative group and friend of the opponent Russian Alexei Navalny (died in prison last February), also interviewed by 60 Minutes. “One theory is that Kovalev was sent to the front to be eliminated,” Grozev said.

The other name is that of Albert Averyanov, son of the commander of unit 29155, who would have been present in 2021 in Tbilisi, Georgia, coinciding with the symptoms suffered by a diplomat and his family.

29155 is a top secret unit of the Russian military secret service, which has been operating for about ten years and specializes in subversion, sabotage and assassinations, also in Europe.

Russia denies any involvement in the mysterious Havana syndrome

The accusations made to Russian intelligence about the so-called “Havana Syndrome” – the disorders, as mentioned, accused by some American officials serving in the Cuban capital and in other diplomatic offices since 2016 – “are unfounded”. He reiterated this to the Russian news agency Tax Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, commenting on the investigation on the subject conducted by a group of Western newspapers.

“You know that this is not a new topic at all – Peskov noted. – The topic of the so-called Havana syndrome has been discussed in the press for many years. And very often from the very beginning it was somehow connected with accusations against Russia , but no one has published or expressed a convincing confirmation of these unfounded accusations. All this is nothing more than a baseless accusation, an unfounded accusation by the media.”
