A lot has happened fifth episode of the fourth season of The Boysincluding the appearance of two Gen V characters and a hilarious moment where Vought announces a huge timeline of films and series in production a la Marvel Studios.

Variety spoke precisely about these two aspects with the creator of the series, Eric Kripke.

The first question is about the appearance of Cate Dunlap (Maddie Phillips) and Sam Riordan (Asa Germann), and what that should indicate about what is currently happening at Godolkin University:

It made sense to do a crossover because of the story of the V52 Expo, and the fact that Homelander would use it as a cover to bring together different superheroes and start building this army. It made sense that Cate, who is also a super supremacist, would want to be a part of this. I think Sam is a little more reluctant, but he doesn’t really express his opinions – he still has to evolve as a character.

Then as for the meaning, as is typical in the Vought universe, the real villains of the situation, Cate and Sam, are packaged by Vought as heroes. They are given a movie and new levels of fame, while the real heroes have been locked away in some secret location that will be revealed in season 2 of Gen V. Our message is that being a hero is usually an under-recognized and thankless thing, and when you are shown to everyone as a hero, you are usually not one at all.

Precisely regarding the convention, the inevitable parallel is to Marvel Studios’ approach to the superhero franchise. Kripke explains that he has not heard any opinions from Marvel:

I’ve heard very casually and in passing that Marvel executives watch and like the show. But I wasn’t given any names or anything — someone just mentioned it to me in passing. But they’re jokes. Like I said, I watch all the Marvel movies. I like them. It seemed to us that the amount of content deserved to be teased a little…

Ironically, Kripke also commented on the fate that many of these projects will have, taking a dig more at David Zaslav’s Warner than Bob Iger’s Disney…

Well, let’s be honest, at least half of it will be written off as a tax deduction, and then a lot of it will go to Vought+, and very few of it will hit theaters. It just seems like that’s the way the business works these days.
