Game of Thrones, the spin-off Ten Thousand Ships is back on track

While we anxiously await the debut of the second season of House of the Dragonmore news is arriving in the world of game of Thrones, to be honest, not exactly a precise and linear universe. Since the end of the main series in 2019, there have been rumors but also projects that were supposed to contribute to expand this narrative universe at the level of serial spin-offs, but while some titles have been confirmed and are currently in production or processing (House of the Dragonin fact, but also the other prequel A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight), others have entered a limbo in which there are numerous and conflicting second thoughts. This concerns in particular a further prequel, entitled Ten Thousand Ships.

It is obviously the author who gives the latest updates A Song of Ice and Fire George R. R. Martin who on his blog congratulated the author, producer and screenwriter Eboni Boothrecently awarded a Pulitzer Prize: “She is a young and wonderfully talented playwright, and a joy to work with; If she wasn’t writing and producing her award-winning work, she was kept busy by myself and HBO writing a new pilot episode of Ten Thousand Ships, a spin-off about Nymeria and the Rhoynar”, writes the writer in his post. It’s about kind of a turning pointbecause only last April the screenwriter initially assigned to this series, Bryan Helgeland, had said that HBO had abandoned the project, rejecting its version of the script. Now we’re back on track, even if Martin remains cautious, if the pilot ever actually goes into production: “We’re really excited for this release, even though we’re still trying to figure out how to pay for ten thousand ships, three hundred dragons, and those giant turtles”.

The story in fact refers to a very remote time compared to the set events of game of Thrones: the Princess Nymeriaalso known as the “Warrior Queen,” was the ruler of Rhoynar people until the invasion of her territories by the forces of the Free Fortress of Valyria, thus forcing her to lead her people on an adventurous ocean crossing on a massive fleet of ships until you get to Dorne, where she marries Lord Mors Martell and introduces many of the traditions and customs of her homelands. Helgeland himself had told the plot as a “story like Moses”, with an entire population forced to abandon their homeland. The fact that you have to invent a lot original material (the references to Nymeria in Martin’s saga are basically quite scant) and that the production of a series like this is virtually extremely expensive ensures the effective implementation of Ten Thousand Ships still remains in doubt. Although it is probably a project that Martin particularly cares about.
