The TV series to watch in May 2024

From the novels of CJ Sansom: 1536, during the dissolution of the monasteries in the Tudor era, the lawyer Matthew Shardlake (Arthur Hughes) is sent by Henry VIII’s prime minister, Thomas Cromwell (Sean Bean), to the remote town of Scarnsea to investigate the death of a commissioner. Here he realizes that this is not the first murder on site and that all the monks seem to have secret affairs. Disturbing and ghostly mystery, before binging, however, a refresher on modern history is needed.

Set in pre-independence India from the United Kingdom and against the backdrop of the liberation movement, it tells of the succession struggle in a kingdom ruled only by women. Two sworn enemies are locked in a struggle for the succession of Heeramandi, where courtesans reign as queens. The only hope is the youngest daughter of one of them, who however renounces power and chooses love. It seems to be one of the most anticipated series of the year and one of the most majestic productions financed by Netflix.

From the bestselling book by Tom Wolfe, adapted by David E. Kelley and directed by Regina King and Thomas Schlamme. This alone would be enough to see it sight unseen. Let’s also say that the protagonist is Jeff Daniels, in the role of Atlanta real estate tycoon Charlie Croker who finds himself facing sudden bankruptcy. As he defends his empire from those seeking to take advantage of his fall from grace, a veritable war of political and commercial interests breaks out. Also in the super cast is Diane Lane (see also below).

After the excellent The Last Man on Earth, Will Forte returns with a new series about a ragtag group of podcasters who decide to investigate mysterious disappearances that occurred decades earlier in an idyllic Irish coastal town. Surprisingly, investigating on site, they discover a story much bigger and more bizarre than they could have ever imagined. Between thriller and dark comedy.

Shonda & Co. alter the chronology of Julia Quinn’s Regency romance novels to tell the story of friendship (?) turned love story of Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin (Luke Newton), the fourth child of the Bridgerton family. What happens if the character who usually acts as a wallflower becomes the protagonist of the story? The third has already been nicknamed the Polin season.

After the clash Joan Crawford (Jessica Lange) vs Bette Davis (Susan Sarandon) on the set of What happened to Baby Jane?Ryan Murphy dives headfirst into another infamous one feud. The one between Capote (Tom Hollander) and the women of New York high society of whom he was a confidant at least until he wrote Prayers answered, a fictionalized and thinly veiled account of their lives. A betrayal that banished him from the upper class and sent him into a spiral of self-destruction. Ewan McGregor is Count Alexander Rostov. In the aftermath of the Russian Revolution, he discovers that his golden past places him on the wrong side of history. Based on the article by Joshuah Bearman (Argon), who is also executive producer, The Big Cigar tells the journey of the founder of the Black Panthers, Huey P. Newton (played by André Holland), who takes refuge in Cuba to escape the FBI thanks to the help of the famous producer Bert Schneider, in a plan so elaborate that it involves a fake production cinematic. Everything will go wrong in every possible way. And, somehow, it’s all true. Almost.

There are those who are already talking about it as the new South Korean series ready to become a phenomenon later Squid Game. Written and directed by Han Jae-rim and adapted from the Korean webtoon Money Game by Bae Jin-soo, The 8 Show follows eight individuals trapped in a mysterious eight-story building participating in a tempting but dangerous program. If they can hold out for 100 days, they will be able to equally share the prize of 44.8 billion won. Obviously there’s a catch.

A spy thriller and cross-cultural satire about the struggles of a half-French, half-Vietnamese communist spy during the final days of the Vietnam War and his new life as a refugee in Los Angeles, where he discovers that his days as a spy are anything but that finished.

After his debut at Saturday Night Live, Shane Gillis plays a boy (named Shane, er) who is about to become the bane of Will’s (Steven Gerben) existence. The latter is the anxious and seemingly unskilled heir to an auto repair chain, attempting to turn around his father’s business despite constant torture from his cousin and now employee Shane.
