Shardlake

From the novels of CJ Sansom: 1536, during the dissolution of the monasteries in the Tudor era, the lawyer Matthew Shardlake (Arthur Hughes) is sent by Henry VIII’s prime minister, Thomas Cromwell (Sean Bean), to the remote town of Scarnsea to investigate the death of a commissioner. Here he realizes that this is not the first murder on site and that all the monks seem to have secret affairs. Disturbing and ghostly mystery, before binging, however, a refresher on modern history is needed.

Heeramandi

Set in pre-independence India from the United Kingdom and against the backdrop of the liberation movement, it tells of the succession struggle in a kingdom ruled only by women. Two sworn enemies are locked in a struggle for the succession of Heeramandi, where courtesans reign as queens. The only hope is the youngest daughter of one of them, who however renounces power and chooses love. It seems to be one of the most anticipated series of the year and one of the most majestic productions financed by Netflix.

From the bestselling book by Tom Wolfe, adapted by David E. Kelley and directed by Regina King and Thomas Schlamme. This alone would be enough to see it sight unseen. Let’s also say that the protagonist is Jeff Daniels, in the role of Atlanta real estate tycoon Charlie Croker who finds himself facing sudden bankruptcy. As he defends his empire from those seeking to take advantage of his fall from grace, a veritable war of political and commercial interests breaks out. Also in the super cast is Diane Lane (see also below).
