A group excursion among friends turned into a tragedy. Oriana Bertolino, a 31-year-old girl from Marsala (Trapani), died in an accident in Malta. According to local press reports, she was riding a quad and fell into the sea from a cliff on the island of Gozo. The accident occurred on Saturday 29 June, around 8 pm, on a side of the “Wied il-Mielah”, near Gharb, a scenic and suggestive place known for its rocky walls overlooking the sea. It seems that the quad was driven by a 47-year-old Italian: he suddenly lost control of the vehicle for reasons still being investigated, but managed to jump off the quad in time and save himself, suffering minor injuries.

The driver was taken to Gozo hospital. There was nothing to be done, however, for Oriana Bertolino: she died from the very serious injuries sustained when she fell into the sea. The dynamics of the accident are yet to be ascertained. The Maltese police are investigating every aspect to clarify the tragedy.
Who was Oriana Bertolino
Oriana Bertolino was known both as a volleyball player, an appreciated player and recently also a technical assistant of the local team, and for her social and cultural commitment. “The news of the tragic and premature death of Oriana Bertolino, 31 years old, a volleyball lover, player and coach, deeply affects us all – writes the president of Fipav-Italian Volleyball Federation Sicily, Antonio Locandro -. The entire regional council and all the members of Cr Sicily join in the pain of Oriana’s mother and brother, of the Marsala volley club and of all her loved ones, in this moment of deep sorrow”.
In a note Massimo Grillo, mayor of Marsala, commented: “Today our community is deeply affected by the tragic news of the loss of the young Oriana Bertolino. At just 31 years old, Oriana lost her life in a tragic accident in Malta, leaving a unbridgeable void in the hearts of all those who knew her. I would like to express, on behalf of the municipal administration and all the citizens of Marsala, our deepest condolences and our closeness to Oriana Possa Oriana’s family rest in peace and his family find the strength to face this immense pain.”
