Positano News – Work accident in Meina, 56-year-old surveyor crushed to death by machinery

A 56 year old surveyor, Charles Maletta from Cercino (Sondrio), died yesterday morning, Tuesday 2 July, following an accident at work that occurred in a railway construction site in Meanon the Piedmontese shore of the Lake Maggiore.

According to initial reconstructions, the man was crushed by machinery that was coming out of a tunnel.

The construction site is located at the northern entrance of the tunnel that passes under Villa Faraggiana. Despite the timely intervention of the 118 emergency services, the surveyor found nothing to do.

Maletta was part of a contractor company that is carrying out work on behalf of Italian Railway Network (RFI) on the Domodossola-Arona-Milan route.

«Rete Ferroviaria Italiana expresses its condolences and closeness to the family of the worker of a contractor, who died on a work area along the Milan-Domodossola railway line“, we read in a note from RFI regarding the accident. “The dynamics of what happened are being examined by the competent authorities to whom RFI is offering the widest collaboration – concludes the note – checks on the fly also by RFI».

«You can’t die from work“, they say Cgil Novara Vco, the Fillea Cgil Novara Vco and the Filt Cgil Novara Vco: «One year after the tragedy in Brandizzo (where 5 workers died on August 30, ed.) we find ourselves once again mourning a death on a railway track. While we wait to have more information about what happened, let’s transform the pain into the daily commitment we exercise through demonstrations, strikes and in the recent referendum campaign: because you cannot die at work. The indignation that will animate those who learn of what happened must be transformed into a sense of responsibility on the part of everyone (workers, businesses and institutions) for compliance with the rules aimed at preventing what are improperly called accidental deaths».
