The journey through time that Cristina Petit undertakes in these pages is rich, documented, and exciting. She rediscovers letters, memories, and documents, reconstructing with empathy and narrative vivacity the plots of many lives and different eras. And from page to page she draws a true alternative dimension of the history of children’s literature: one that is born from the gaze of children themselves.
Looking carefully at the greatest children’s books, from the 19th century to the present day, you will discover a common detail: they were written for children. Real, flesh-and-blood, with sparkling eyes, attentive ears and sticky little hands. They are sometimes stories inspired by them, by the sons and daughters of the authors, adventures perhaps born from stories around the fire or beside the bed, from afternoons on a boat and family vacations. Other times they were created for the more prosaic need to support them, those children, using their own ingenuity to scrape together some money, only to find themselves with a capital that is not only economic, but also imaginative. Thus the personal and professional stories of children’s most beloved writers – from James Barrie to Judith Kerr, from Beatrix Potter to Maurice Sendak – and those of their characters intertwine, recall and complement each other: Babar and Long John Silver, Tarzan and Spotty, Winnie the Pooh and Barbapapa, and a thousand others follow one another on the page together with their inspirers, to reveal to us the most varied adventures, both familiar and historical, behind their creation and their success.
