Arianna, who died 22 years ago: request for the murder investigation to be dropped

Screen “Who has seen it?”

There is no truth about the death of Arianna Zardi, the 25-year-old found lifeless under a bridge in Torricella del Pizzo, in the Cremona area, on 2 October 2001. The deputy prosecutor of Cremona, Andrea Figoni, asked the investigating judge to close the case for homocide against unknown persons. Last September, the preliminary investigations judge Pierpaolo Beluzzi rejected the request for archiving by the prosecutor, granting a six-month extension for further investigations. But, as reported The dayadditional investigations “they did not produce any significant results“.

The archiving request

In the autumn it seemed that a glimmer of hope had opened for the resolution of the mystery, thanks also to the perseverance of Arianna’s family who never believed in either the hypothesis of accidental death or extreme action. The new investigations should have served to reconstruct the last hours of the girl’s life and help some people again testimony who, at the time of the facts, had provided some statements deemed contradictory by the judge. Apparently, no decisive elements have emerged. As the prosecutor himself underlined, the time that had passed was a determining factor. For this reason, to date, the involvement of other people remains excluded.

“There were more things to do”

Arianna’s family has thirty days to oppose the request for archiving. “There were more things to do, which perhaps would have provided some answers“, Sara Zardi, the sister of Arianna who has been fighting for the truth for 22 years. “Is sad – added the lawyer Bertoletti, the woman’s lawyer –that it is not possible to determine with certainty the causes of Arianna’s death. Unfortunately, time has played a negative role“.

Arianna’s suspicious death

Arianna Zardi, 25, was a theology student and worked as an employee. Around 1:00 pm on September 30, 2001, she left her home in Casalbellotto, a hamlet in the municipality of Casalmaggiore (Cremona). Two days later, she was found lifeless in a small irrigation canal under a bridge between Motta Baluffi and Torricella del Pizzo, in the Cremona area. There were several fractures on the body. Furthermore, some male biological traces were identified on the girl’s clothing and other papillary traces on her personal effects. But from the comparison of the findings with the DNA of the 25-year-old’s friends and peers, no compatibility emerged.

A 17-year-old was investigated on suspicion of murder for the purpose of robbery and then released. His position was subsequently dismissed.

Over the years the case has been archived and reopened several times but, to date, there has been no useful feedback for the investigations.
