The horror of an afternoon of homicidal madness captured in a shocking image. The photo that one of Cristopher Thomas Luciani’s alleged murderers took of himself at the seaside around 6:30 pm last Sunday left people stunned in Pescara. At 5:10 pm, that is, just over an hour earlier according to the prosecution, that same boy – together with a companion – had launched himself like a fury against the frail victim, killing her with 25 stab wounds in Baden Powell Park. Only at 9 pm was little Cristopher found dead, face down, in a pool of blood in the grass.

In the photo at the seaside, the face of the alleged unscrupulous killer – we’ll call him Marco, a fictitious name – seems to be that of a 16-year-old boy who just wants to enjoy the summer. But looking more carefully, things are not like that. Marco is surrounded by friends of the group, those – or at least some – who were with him in the park and who are well aware of the terrible bloody event that has just occurred. He has a proud look, Marco, shows his muscles and keeps his fist closed on his chest. The attitude of the negative hero who imposes himself on others and who has just sent a message of death to his enemies: with him whoever goes astray pays. How Christopher paid, guilty of not having honored a drug-related debt of just 250 euros. A question of “respect”, says Marco, according to his very personal law of the strongest.

Thomas Luciani, how he was killed. “The stab wounds pierced the lungs: almost instantaneous death.” The results of the autopsy

Dirty clothes

There is another disturbing detail: the boy shows himself wearing the undershirt that he wore to the park immediately after the crime; so she had brought it from home for a change. Circumstance which could lead to the hypothesis of the aggravating circumstance of premeditation against him. Clothes, the undershirt and the others, which the police searched for in the boy’s house and recovered later in the grandmother’s apartment. «You turn on the washing machine at night, if you take them away as usual» the justification. Which, however, does not hold up: among the investigators, the suspicion arose that the thing was not accidental and that, indeed, someone in the family – the mother is a lawyer – had acted in this way by trying to have them washed immediately or to make their clothes disappear of the young man presumably stained with the blood of the massacre in the park. A detail that the men of the Pescara flying squad, coordinated by chief commissioner Mauro Sablone, did not overlook; on the contrary they literally flew to retrieve them. Their speed rewarded them: the clothes of the alleged murderer were actually found in the grandmother’s house. They had not yet been washed, were bloody and were seized. The family has not yet been accused of anything.

Validation

The two suspects for the murder of Christopher Thomas Luciani offered different versions at the first interrogation at the police station on Monday night: one denied the accusations, the other made some admissions. Yesterday, however, they both made use of the right not to respond to the hearing confirming the arrests. Marco was transferred to a juvenile center in Rome, the other, who we will call Carlo, is in L’Aquila. The lawyer Marco Di Giulio (who represents Carlo, son of a Carabinieri non-commissioned officer), followed the hearing in person while the other lawyer, Roberto Mariani, connected electronically. The medical examiner, Cristian D’Ovidio, completed the autopsy yesterday evening and it emerged that both lungs were affected, with irreversible hemorrhagic shock, and death was instantaneous. Now the prosecutor’s consultant will have to ascertain whether the blows were inflicted by a right-handed or left-handed person, to establish the responsibilities of the accused. At this point, the hypothesis that Thomas could have been saved if a timely 118 report had been made by the other boys present at the park, direct or indirect witnesses of the crime, fades away.

They wanted to make him suffer

The investigating judge of the juvenile court of L’Aquila, Roberto Ferrari, validated the arrest on the basis of a belief that makes one shudder: «The only true intent is to cause suffering and death». That is, what animates them “is the harmful impulse, that of causing suffering and killing a human being, to the point of almost integrating the futile motive”. «The precautionary needs must be considered to exist – writes the judge – taking into account the seriousness of the murder, which manifests an extremely violent inclination of the suspects, far exceeding the motive at the origin of the attack, so that it must be considered that the collection of the credit has only activated the criminal impulse, then severing any further connection with the objective of meeting the debtor”. Motive, that of debt, which does not even exist for the other boy (son of the policeman) involved in the stabbing. His friend, in fact, was able to carry it out “without the contribution of others”, specifies the investigating judge.
