The intervention of the Forestry Carabinieri began in the “Lampitedde” district, following the report of a citizen, who had alerted the military about a column of smoke rising into the sky.
Having managed to identify the person responsible, the Carabinieri proceeded to report him to the Public Prosecutor’s Office: if convicted, he risks 3 to 7 years in prison. The firefighters and Civil Protection volunteers took care of putting out the fire before it could spread further.
Since 15 June, the date of activation of the period of serious danger for forest fires, the Forestry Carabinieri have intensified and organized patrol services, as ordered by the Region.
Particular attention is paid to the most sensitive areas, such as that of Santa Cesarea Terme, whose pine forest and Mediterranean scrub extensions have been repeatedly tormented in recent years, most recently last October, when, even at the end of the season, the prolonged drought conditions favored dangerous fires near the town, also putting nearby homes at risk.
