In Gaggi, the motorcyclist, a young man who worked in a hotel in Taormina, lost his life in a collision between cars and scooters. The woman behind the wheel of a Volkswagen was saved. But how many motorcyclists have been involved in road accidents in the last two months? Too many. All seriously injured and some dead. Continuous clashes with mopeds, scooters and motorcycles have recently been recorded on the roads and seafronts of the Ionian area, with several injured: on the Furci seafront, collision between a motorbike and a small car; on the seafront of S.Teresa di Riva between a scooter and a car; head-on collision between two motorbikes in Spisone (Taormina); in Letojanni, in Nice, in Roccalumera, everywhere. Young people on scooters (this is not the case with the young man from Gaggi who proceeded regularly) have a frenzy to overtake, to squeeze between two cars, to do wheelies, to zigzag. And summer has just begun. Luckily there are few daredevils, the majority of motorcyclists abide by the highway code, they are prudent, responsible young people. On the sidelines of these serious accidents, there were many comments we recorded: “Motorcyclists cause too many accidents”; and then “They run at high speed”; and again: “They slip between the cars, passing from one to the other”, and again “They overtake two, three cars on the seafront, then the first car turns and the impact occurs”; Finally, “we are even afraid of walking on pedestrian crossings.” What can we do to empower these (few) young daredevils who speed around on two wheels at full speed?
