The Palermo coast guard rescued a crew member of an Italian motor fishing vessel, sailing approximately 55 miles north-east of the Gulf of Palermo.
The operations room received a request for urgent medical assistance for a 44-year-old man from the crew who suffered a serious trauma during navigation and required immediate medical attention.
The patrol boat sent to the area intercepted the fishing unit and the seafarer was taken and taken to the port of Palermo where the 118 health workers were waiting for him with an ambulance to transport him to hospital. The weather and sea conditions were not favorable and despite everything the soldiers managed to reach the boat.
The tragedy of Campofelice di Roccella
A worker died in Campofelice di Roccella, in the province of Palermo, falling from scaffolding. The victim is Giovanni Terrana, 64 years old. The man was carrying out renovation work on a building in the town in via Imera. According to an initial reconstruction, he fell from scaffolding and hit his head. For an hour the medics tried to resuscitate him. But eventually his pulse stopped beating. The Carabinieri and ASP technicians also intervened for the investigations coordinated by the Termini Imerese prosecutor’s office.
Investigations are underway on the company that was carrying out the work. On the construction site together with Giovanni Terrana there are his two sons who work together with their father. Terrana fell from a height of 4 or 5 meters. The ASP technicians are verifying the regularity of the assignment of the works and whether the safety regulations have been respected. It is also necessary to establish who the owner of the company is. The investigations are conducted by the Carabinieri of the Cefalù company and by the ASP technicians who carry out checks on construction sites. The medical examiner also intervened.
Lionti (Uil): “Close to the family”
“Another victim of work in Sicily, this time in Campofelice di Roccella in the Palermo area. Another tragedy, another national disgrace. Uil clings to this family and their pain to express its closeness.” This was stated by the general secretary herself, Luisella Lionti, after learning of the death of the worker who fell from scaffolding. And he adds: “While waiting for the judiciary to shed full light on the causes of this accident, we reiterate the need for immediate interventions on the system of lowest-cost tenders and cascade subcontracts, as already proposed by our general secretary, Pierpaolo Bombardieri. Effective and necessary solutions and tools must be found to stop workplace deaths, or rather murders. This union – concludes Lionti – will continue to pressure those who govern for harsher legislation, for greater training, prevention and more frequent checks”.
The mayor: “It’s not possible to die like this”
“Three months later we mourn another death at work. It is a painful moment for my country. We all know the worker. This morning he joked with several customers in a bar while he was having breakfast. A good person. An always cheerful company man. We are truly devastated.” The mayor of Campofelice di Roccella Giuseppe Di Maggio is truly heartbroken by what happened. He saw the worker on the ground while the 118 paramedics attempted to resuscitate him. “They were and are very painful moments. It all happened in the center of the town in Via Imera in a building that was being renovated – he adds – Many witnessed the drama that was being experienced. It is not possible to die in the workplace. It is not acceptable”. In February this year another 49-year-old construction worker Mario Cirincione died in Campofelice di Roccella. He was 49 years old. He was hit by a wall that collapsed during work on a property in the countryside.
