over a third of contracts last a single day

A worrying picture emerges from the CGIL’s analysis of the labor market in Lazio. The data highlights an alarming incidence of short-term contracts, with over a third (39.3%) of contracts activated in 2023 in the region lasting just one day.

This is a situation that worsens over time, with an increase of 2.8 percentage points over the last three years. Comparing the regional data with the national one, the precariousness in Lazio is even more evident: the Italian average of one-day contracts stands at 13.7%.

If contracts of up to 30 days are also consideredthe percentage of precarious employment relationships in Lazio exceeds 60%, a figure well above the national average.

This data is a tangible sign that in Lazio new employment is increasingly driven by precariousness,” denounces the CGIL. “The causes are to be found both in wrong laws – against which the union is mobilizing with four separate referendums – and in the inaction of the institutions and of too many companies that favor profits over decent work.”

Despite the positive balance between new and terminated employment relationships in Lazio (with an increase of 113% in 2023 compared to 2022), contractual precariousness represents a significant obstacle to the growth and sustainable development of the region.

We ask the Lazio Region and the Municipality of Rome – where the majority of workers are concentrated – to make courageous choices to reverse the trend,” concludes the CGIL. “It is necessary to emerge from stagnation and from a development model that does not work, also in view of the Jubilee which can represent an important opportunity to restore the productive fabric and create quality employment.”

The analysis of the CGIL urges careful reflection on the need for concrete interventions to combat precariousness in Lazio.

Among the priorities, legislative reforms, more effective control over compliance with labor regulations and measures aimed at promoting sustainable and quality work models.
