Request for interpellation to the new European Parliament on Edison’s LNG gas storage project at the Port of Brindisi

TOASTS – We receive and publish a note from the Territorial group M5s Brindisi on the recent ruling of the Lazio TAR confirming the authorization of the LNG gas project in Brindisi

Following the recent ruling of the Lazio Regional Administrative Court of 19 June 2024, which confirmed the authorization of the LNG gas storage project presented by Edison for the Port of Brindisi with connection to the national gas pipeline network managed by Snam, an interpellation is requested from the new European Parliament. The project, authorized by the Ministry of Ecological Transition (Mase) on 22 August 2022, is considered a regasification terminal and part of the strategic gas supply infrastructure of national importance. For this reason, the Lazio Regional Administrative Court has jurisdiction in the matter.

Despite this, the project was not subjected to the mandatory Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), contrary to what was sanctioned by Mase itself and by the Via del Mase Commission in 2023. These authorities had in fact deemed it necessary to submit an identical project, presented by Edison for the port of Oristano, on the mandatory route.

The ruling of the Lazio Regional Administrative Court of 19 June 2024 confirms that the Brindisi depot, being connected to the national gas pipeline network managed by Snam, must be subject to mandatory approval, as established for the Oristano project. The Territorial Group of Brindisi of the 5 Star Movement requests the elected members of the European Parliament, Valentina Palmisano and Mario Furore, to integrate the interpellation already presented, attaching the ruling of the Lazio Regional Administrative Court of 19 June 2024, to examine the failure to apply the mandatory route in the authorization procedure of the Edison project in Brindisi.

The European Parliament is called upon to monitor the correct application of environmental regulations and the transparency of authorization procedures, in order to guarantee that all strategic infrastructures comply with the required environmental and safety standards. Once again we want to raise the issue of the lack of environmental impact assessment of Edison’s LNG storage project at the Port of Brindisi, and to ask the European Parliament to intervene in this regard, thus guaranteeing compliance with current environmental regulations.
