Zermatt: damage is counted after the flood, isolation ends

After last Friday’s flood due to the overflowing of the Vispa which isolated Zermatt, the weather alert was lifted yesterday in the Swiss Valais.

“The situation is stabilizing and the waters continue to recede,” declared the cantonal control body (OCC). However, river volumes continue to be high and floods have weakened the banks.

Those responsible for the particularly affected areas said they were relieved that there had been no loss of life. However, they stressed that the damage was significant.

Catastrophic situation

“The situation is catastrophic at the moment,” he told Keystone-ATS David Melly, mayor of Anniviers, adding that about ten vehicles are currently in the Navizance river to make it safe. Embankments, pipes and roads were destroyed. In Evolène, in the Val d’Hérens, the Borgne river overflowed.

Since Saturday evening Zermatt is no longer isolated. Trains are running again between Täsch and the Alto Valais area. However, between Visp and Täsch, the Vispa River had a significant impact on the line. Replacement buses are running on the route. “Due to the limited capacity of the replacement traffic, waiting times may now be longer in Täsch and Visp,” Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn explained on X.

The situation has also returned to normal in the Chablais region of Vaud.
