The women’s foil Dream Team is still golden and marks the triumph of Italy in the medal table of the European Championships in Basel 2024. Arianna Errigo, Martina Favaretto, the Lucanian Francesca Palumbo and Alice Volpi dominate Poland in the final, winning by 45 -27 and stand on the top step of the podium on the sixth and final day of the continental event in Switzerland, giving Italy the eleventh medal (5 gold, 3 silver and 3 bronze). Coach Stefano Cerioni’s team also achieves the arithmetic certainty of first place in the world team ranking and will therefore be seeded number 1 in the Paris Olympic Games draw.
Errigo, Favaretto, Palumbo and Volpi made their debut by beating Austria with a score of 45-36 in the quarter-finals, with the team from Potenza achieving a positive balance of four hits in its three fractions. Francesca Palumbo was also the protagonist in the semi-final with Hungary, which ended with the eloquent result of 45-17.
The final against Poland marked the third consecutive victory at the European Championships after Antalya 2022 and Krakow 2023. “We have formed a compact group, which helps each other and never gives up. In this spirit we look forward to the next race with ever greater confidence”, smiles Francesca Palumbo, already thinking of the Paris Olympics. The next edition of the European Championships will take place in Italy, in Genoa, from 14 to 19 June 2025.
