On the closing day of the “XXVII SIBPA National Congress”, organized by the Society of Pure and Applied Biophysics, held in Genoa from 16 to 20 June 2024, the young and talented researcher from Palermo Sara Anselmo received the prestigious “Antonio Borsellino Award” , named after one of the pioneers of Italian biophysics, for the best doctoral thesis in the biophysical field.
Identification
The event took place in the splendid setting of Palazzo della Borsa, where Dr. Anselmo had the opportunity to present the main results of her doctoral work, carried out at the Department of Physics and Chemistry of the University of Palermo.
His research, in particular, focuses on elucidating the molecular mechanisms and forces that drive the interaction between proteins/peptides and membranes, underlying physiological, pathological and therapeutic processes. The researcher’s work also proposes a new experimental approach that could find significant applications in various scientific fields.

Another Sicilian awarded
Luisa De Cola, originally from Messina, will be awarded by the British Royal Society of Chemistry for her innovative research in the biomolecular field and for the related innovations in the pharmaceutical sector.
De Cola specializes in supramolecular chemistry and photochemistry, electroluminescence and electrochemiluminescence, and nanomaterials for biomedical applications. One of her main projects involves creating a system capable of identifying tumor cells and reducing the side effects of drugs. This system is a sort of “container” that can be coated with molecules capable of selectively recognizing specific organs or tumor cells.
Professor at the University of Milan, she is also director of the “Materials for Health” unit at the “Mario Negri” Pharmacological Research Institute in Milan.
