block for tourists without reservations, green light for those with second homes

After the stop to tourists, a second order arrives from the mayor of Capri, in a water emergency due to a network failure since this morning, for those who have already booked or have a second home on the Campania island.

The ban on access to the island for non-residents has been confirmed, from 3pm today until the inconvenience ceases, however there isdisembarkation is permitted to customers of accommodation facilities “that have sufficient water resources available to guarantee their hospitality and that they present the booking certificate at the boarding ticket office”.

The ordinance also allows access to the island to members of the police force, healthcare and transport workers, staff or representatives of companies operating on the island and employees of public administrations.

Without supplies, Falco underlines, it is impossible to guarantee essential services taking into account the “thousands of people” who arrive every day during the tourist season.

At the moment water is still supplied in most of the island. Some isolated areas of the municipality of Anacapri are dry. However, only the local reservoirs which, in the absence of supplies from the mainland, threaten to run out.

The municipal administrations of Capri and Anacapri have established a joint crisis unitin which the hoteliers’ association also participates.

It is hypothesized that inside the pipes, which were the subject of a repair on land, there may have been created an air bubble or an accumulation of material that prevents water from reaching the island’s distribution network. As a precaution, the population is stocking up on mineral water in shops and supermarkets. The transport of goods and all other supplies continues regularly.

While waiting for the emergency to be resolved, a tanker will be made available by the Gori company for the supply of drinking water to Capri. The tanker will be present at Piazzale Europa from 3pm. “Citizens residing in the Municipality of Capri, who have needs, will be able to go, equipped with their own containers, to collect a quantity maximum of 25 liters per household“, says the Municipality of Capri, which trusts “in the collaboration and common sense of the citizens”.

Queues and inconveniences at the ports of departure

The stop to the disembarkation of tourists on Capri due to the water emergency is causing consequences in the ports of departure towards the blue island, starting from Molo Beverello in Naples where there are long queues of passengers at the ticket offices of the shipping companies.

The order from the mayor of Capri was notified shortly after nine o’clock (in some cases by the police directly at the company box offices), causing an immediate stop to ticketing; the ships and hydrofoils that had already left for Capri were contacted via radio by the maritime authority who ordered their return in port and disembarkation of passengers.

At Beverello the companies are refunding hundreds of tickets although many tourists preferred not to miss the day’s excursion and chose alternative destinations by boarding hydrofoils to Ischia, Sorrento or the Amalfi Coast. Calmer situation at the port of Sorrento, the other departure hub for Capri from where the departures of many tourists were scheduled this morning; long but orderly queues and tourists waiting for refunds or to leave for other locations reachable by seaAnd.

“All investigations and checks are underway to resolve the critical issues and restore the service.” This is what the Gori company, which manages the water service on Capri, says, ensuring “timely updates on the evolution of activities”. Apparently, the fault is a direct result of the works carried out last June 20th on State Road 145 in the municipality of Castellammare di Stabia.

The mayor’s alarm in the morning: “Explosive health situation”

“The health and hygiene situation is explosive, we have taken our countermeasures and activated the crisis unit and issued a restrictive order.” Thus the mayor of Capri Paolo Falco, regarding the failure of the water network which caused the stoppage of water supply on the island. “Together with the mayor of Anacapri we have been working with the Prefecture and all the relevant bodies since tonight – he states – Hundreds of people have disembarked, we have made a restrictive order, there is no water on the island due to a fault on the mainland in Castellammarewhich has been repaired, but since yesterday Gori has not given us clarity and has not allowed us to intervene adequately, they have guaranteed us that the water would arrive”.
