Modica. “2022 report, worrying picture”

“A worrying picture”. This is how Vito D’Antona, Sinistra Italiana Modica, describes the financial situation of the Municipality of Modica, after an analysis of the 2022 Report proposal, approved by the Municipal Council.

The Municipal Administration of Modica, more than two years after the deadline and with a commissionership in place, – explains D’Antona – has approved the proposed 2022 financial statement to be submitted to the Municipal Council.

The most significant data in the budget, as formulated by the City Council, represent a financial situation that is much more serious than that of the 2021 financial statement.

In fact, the administration deficit at the end of 2022 amounted to over 117 million euros, therefore being higher than that at the end of 2021 by over 36 million euros; over one hundred million debts contracted in recent years with the State, of which 92 million still to be repaid in the coming years; an amount of uncollected credits of approximately 179 million euros, of which 120 million are considered difficult to collect.

And again, ongoing legal disputes for around 6 million euros; another 6 million euros of off-balance sheet debts ascertained but not yet recognized at the end of 2022; a debt of 4 million euros needed to cover SPM’s losses and over 2 million euros to be paid to Multiservizi; average payment times towards suppliers exceeding seven months, when the law requires payment within 30 days.

A worrying picture that originated in previous years which, if confirmed in subsequent years, could make the possibility of guaranteeing essential services to citizens more problematic.

We reiterate once again that a turning point is needed that puts the pursuit of financial recovery at the centre of political and administrative action”.
