SEVENVILLE (BELLUNO) – A very serious fact. This is what alerted the medical management of the hospital Feltre who immediately reported theUlss who in turn forwarded everything to the Belluno prosecutor’s office: there are some further investigations to be done on the hospitalization of father Luigi Bassetto. The religious man, who lived in Quero a Santa Maria, municipality of Setteville, in the Castelnuovo Castle of the Comaschi fathers, the order to which he belonged, died at the age of 80 on 19 June in the medical department of the Feltre hospital. For that death the Public Prosecutor’s Office has opened a case with the hypothesis of manslaughter and will set for next week the hearing for the appointment of the autopsy which will be carried out at the Belluno hospital. It is not known at the moment whether there are any suspects and consequently any party consultants.
THE HOSPITALITY
It was the first days of June when Father Luigi Bassetto was admitted to the Santa Maria del Prato hospital in Feltre. He had suffered heart failure and in the already critical clinical picture, compromised by two strokes he had had over the years, the situation immediately made people fear the worst. After about a couple of weeks his death, which left the many people who loved the religious man in pain.
TO THE CASTLE
The Castle of Santa Maria, where Father Bassetto had resided for years, is also in mourning. His caregiver answers his phone and cuts it short: “Let’s not waste time: I’m tired.” A volunteer, a collaborator of the house of the Comaschi fathers, picks up the phone and explains that for hours the castle has been bombarded with calls from people asking for information on what happened to the religious man, known in Veneto and Lombardy. Because everyone was waiting for that funeral which should have been celebrated yesterday morning, but which, with a communication in the rosary the evening before, had been postponed to a date yet to be determined.

The volunteer explains that Father Bassetto was spiritual assistant of the San Girolamo association, which is based in the Quero Castle and for this reason he was resident here in the Feltrino area. «In 20 years it has followed over 4 thousand families – explains the volunteer – it is a partnership that takes care of the education of children in affectivity and sexuality from fifth grade to fourth grade. Among the many things he did in his life, he met thousands of people and did so much good, he had these volunteers who assisted him for 4 years, because he had had these strokes.” And the volunteer is keen to point out: «The assistance provided by the Feltre hospital was impeccable. Now this delay in the funeral: we couldn’t do anything but take note of it. We are patiently awaiting the outcome of the investigations, which should conclude peacefully: the father was very ill and had been cared for for some time, the outcome of his illness was awaited.”

Efather Bassetto was very close to Quero. «It was here in the seventies – says the volunteer -, the Castello di San Girolamo association is based here, and it is the home of spirituality of the Como fathers». And it tells the story of faith that has been told for years: «Girolamo Emiliani was commander of the castle of Quero, when he was imprisoned he had a miraculous liberation and brought his chains as pledge to the Sanctuary of Santa Maria Maggiore in Treviso, for this the castle is owned by the Como fathers and there is a connection with Santa Maria Maggiore.”
The funeral will be held in the Treviso basilica, but at a later date.
