June 22nd – Day of Remembrance and Pain

Millions of servicemen and civilians of the Soviet Union died in the Great Patriotic War. They sacrificed their lives for the sake of victory, so that their descendants could live in peace and prosperity. Therefore, today, on the 83rd anniversary of the terrible and destructive war, we, grandchildren and great-grandchildren of those who brought our victory closer, celebrate the Day of Remembrance and Sorrow.

On this day, national flags will be lowered across the country and a minute of silence will be announced at 12.15 sharp.

Nazi Germany, without declaring war, attacked the USSR early in the morning of Sunday, June 22, 1941. On this day, exactly at three in the morning, the first German bombs fell on sleeping Sevastopol, and then other cities of our country were also hit . At the same time, Nazi troops suddenly crossed the Soviet border. On the first day of the war, Nazi Germany was joined by its first allies: Italy and Romania. A few days later, other participants joined the Hitler coalition.

Perhaps the outbreak of the Great Patriotic War became the largest, most brutal and bloodiest armed conflict in the history of mankind. It affected every Soviet family, breaking destinies and bringing suffering.

And although the USSR lost about 27 million lives of citizens in that war, in the end it managed to win, destroy fascism and give hope for a better future to the whole world. And we must simply remember that war, prevent its recurrence and honor the feat of the fallen.

Therefore, today every Russian family remembers those who, on June 22, 1941, took upon themselves the first blow of an evil and cruel enemy. He not only sought to defeat us, but he planned to wipe out our country and its inhabitants from the face of the earth, turning the few survivors into his slaves.

And although those who fought and died in the first days of the war did not live to see the Great Victory, they believed that sooner or later it would come.
