The world that Singh Satnam and his wife had built together is enclosed in a patch of low houses, cultivated fields, greenhouses that almost disappear, and bicycle rides to enter the heart of the countryside. It’s a world wrapped in a handful of square kilometers, marked by timetables and deadlines. The wake-up call at dawn, the return, a watermelon and courgettes given to the neighbors. “Boss, keep the good watermelon, it’s for you,” he said the evening before he died to Ilario, his neighbor, in an Italian that just thinking about it arouses deep tenderness. This is where dreams and hopes flourished.
Everything stopped behind a gate in via Genova, in Borgo Bainsizza. Satnam Singh, 31 years old, Ilario’s age, arrived without an arm, mutilated as if a bomb had exploded in a war scenario. She became a victim of a workplace accident that will change a part of history. «Navi’s wife, as we all called him, keeps repeating that her husband is still alive, she doesn’t realize», says Noemi who together with her husband Ilario experienced the tragedy live. They saw Navi arrive without a piece of his arm. Noemi is shocked. «But how is it possible for a man to do something like that to another man. How is it possible? Here we talk about humanity », she repeats with tears in her eyes.
“She’s in shock, she hasn’t processed the death yet, she thinks her husband will come back”, she remembers thinking about what the farm worker’s wife repeated to her. Yesterday morning the woman felt ill and the intervention of a 118 ambulance was necessary to help her. She is a witness, she was with her husband when she was put into Lovato’s van that took them home. «Italy no good», is one of her words that she whispered when she was at San Camillo in Rome and asked for news of her husband before he died. «She feels terrible», she says, «she doesn’t realize, she has seen everything, she has experienced everything. We ask for justice, we tried to help him until the end. We did everything we could. The wife threw herself at me and she repeated “Husband cut” she continued to say this.”
They loved each other, they wanted a child and were trying to save money to create a family here in Italy where they were happy. «Navi and his wife were two splendid people, they were unique». Their future will no longer be here.
