The death of the laborer Satnam Singh, abandoned in the street with his arm severed by a machine, was an “inhuman act”, a “barbarism” that must be “harshly punished”. Giorgia Meloni said this during this evening’s Council of Ministers. Tomorrow there will be a meeting between the ministries of Labor and Agriculture and trade unions.

At the beginning of this evening’s meeting of the Council of Ministers, President Giorgia Meloni spoke with a “harsh condemnation” of the case of the laborer of Indian origin Satnam Singh, who died after having his arm cut off and being abandoned in street. According to Palazzo Chigi sources, Meloni expressed his closeness to Singh’s wife and family and said: “They are inhumane acts who do not belong to the Italian people, and I hope that this barbarism will be harshly punished”. Meloni’s speech during the government summit came after two briefings from the Minister of Labor Marina Calderone and the Minister of Agriculture Francesco Lollobrigida on the topic of exploitation of work.

Calderone would have listed the interventions of the executive since he took office, such as the introduction of the crime of illicit supply of labor with arrest of up to one month. Lollobrigida instead would have underlined the government’s commitment to carry out stricter controls, reorganize regular immigration flows and also work on “training in the countries of origin, including on trade union rights”. Singh was regularly in Italy with a nine-month work contract. The government also announced that tomorrow there will be a meeting at the Ministry of Labor summit with both ministries, trade union representativesthose of employers and the competent public bodies.

Today the Minister of Agriculture spoke on the case of the labourer, calling him “another innocent victim of a criminal system that exploits human beings in the name of unfair profit”. Lollobrigida then argued: “Regardless of nationality, a human life has been lost due to lack of compliance with the rules. It is necessary, however, to make public the commitment of our government in these 20 months and also the responsibilities of who has done little or nothing in the past to prevent the situation from degenerating”. The minister had criticized “the usual exploitation of many who, despite having had important institutional and trade union roles, have not done much useful. And despite knowing, they often closed themselves in a complicit silence.”

The words of the father of the businessman under investigation for the death of the labourer, who yesterday commented: “I warned him not to approach the vehicle, but he did his own thing, sparked controversy. A lightness that cost everyone dearly“. Giuseppe Conte, leader of the 5 Star Movement, commented: “A death in that gruesome way cannot be lighthearted. We really have to do a lot to guarantee safety, to combat illegal work, to combat gangmastering”. The Democratic Party presented a question to the Rai Supervision Commission, contesting the television report in which this phrase was relaunched without “any mention of the dramatic dynamics of the event and the circumstances not worthy of a civilized country like Italy”. On Saturday, in Latina, a demonstration launched by the unions will be held to contest the working conditions of the labourers.
