The flames burned for hours, starting on Wednesday afternoon and then throughout the night. Save the threatened homes, but evacuate the nuns of the Camaldoli Hermitage. Ash “rain” over the city today

Operations to put out the huge fire that devastated the Camaldoli hill in Naples continued throughout the night. This morning, Thursday, small outbreaks persist and smoke is still rising, but the danger, which seemed to be approaching houses more and more threateningly throughout the night, seems to have subsided. Canadair and are still flying over the area ash “rains” on many neighborhoods of the city: the sky of Naples appears grayed by smoke and many on social media complain that they were unable to sleep last night due to the acrid smell.

The homes that had been touched by the flames – the firefighters report – they are safe and there was no need to clear them out. Yesterday, late in the evening, the nuns who live in the Camaldoli hermitage had been evacuated as a precaution.

Also late on Wednesday evening, the prefect of Naples, Michele Di Bari, also went to the site. The government representative took care of activating the service coordination centre.

The malicious trail

The beaten track is the malicious one and it is not excluded that the Naples Prosecutor’s Office could open an investigation file against unknown persons. It was probably the man’s hand that started the flames in thelarge wooded area close to the Neapolitan neighborhoods of Pianura, Soccavo and Vomero. An impervious area, where the firefighters had difficulty reaching with the nozzles connected to the tankers. The wind then helped to spread the flames which found natural fuel in the undergrowth. The firefighters are also working to identify and isolate trigger points.

Ash rain

More than 15 hours after the first report, the flames have not yet been completely put out. The ashes carried by the wind rained down on the neighboring neighborhoods. This morning parked cars and balconies, even in the historic center area, were covered in ash.
