New stop by the Egyptian authorities to judicial cooperation with Italy in the Giulio Regeni affair. According to what emerged in the hearing against four Egyptian 007s, in recent days the Farnesina sent to the Rome prosecutors a note from the General Prosecutor’s Office of Egypt which states that it is “impossible to carry out requests for judicial assistance” to listen to four Egyptian witnesses in today’s hearing. Among them also the trade unionist Said Abdallah, the coordinator of a Center for Economic and Social Rights, Hoda Kamel Hussein and Rabab Ai-Mahdi, Regeni’s tutor in Cairo. In light of this, the deputy prosecutor, Sergio Colaiocco, asked the Court of Assizes to be able to acquire the testimonies of the “absent” witnesses collected during the investigations. “We are in the presence of texts who did not freely choose not to be here. We have tried everything to bring the texts here,” the deputy said.
Family lawyer: “Egypt obstructionism is illegitimate”
“Despite all the efforts made by the Prosecutor’s Office and despite the formal requests that have been put in place by the Farnesina, the Egyptian obstructionism is undeniable, which at this point seems insurmountable but which also according to the arguments we have heard from the public prosecutor, is completely illegitimate. So the problem is Egyptian obstructionism. Clearly anyone who says there is collaboration is lying. And today we have proof of this.” This is what was stated by the lawyer Alessandra Ballerini, lawyer for Giulio Regeni’s parents, on the sidelines of the hearing in the trial against four Egyptian 007s which took place today in the Rebibbia bunker courtroom. The criminal lawyer wanted to thank Pif and Stefano Accorsi “who lent their voices in the video of the meeting between Regeni and the Egyptian trade unionist who betrayed him. “This video tells us many things – he added -, it tells us that Abdallah was an agent provocateur, who tried to make Giulio fall into constant traps. It tells us Giulio’s purity and also his academic side. Ultimately it tells us of an absolute lack of communication between the two, not only because they speak two different languages. Abdallah wanted to frame Giulio and hand him over to National Security.”
