During the session of the Regional Council which took place on Tuesday 18 June, the interim president Alessandro Piana highlighted the importance of the ecological role of the wolf, citing scientific studies that specify its extensive eating habits, including those concerning wild boar.

“The ecological role of the wolf is indisputable. As highlighted in numerous scientific studies, its eating habits are very broad and also concern, but not exclusively, wild boar.” Thus the interim president Alessandro Piana in the session of the Regional Council in response to the Sansa List on the question concerning possible environmental risks deriving from the depopulation of wild boars and human interventions in the ecosystem.
“The balance of the ecosystem is a dynamic phenomenon – continues Alessandro Piana –. For this reason, the Liguria Region avails itself of the support of the University of Genoa, through a specific multi-year agreement with the Department of Earth, Environmental and Life Sciences (DISTAV) for the development of research of common interest on wildlife . In recent years, the active fight against the African swine fever epidemic has been added to this complex picture, which for free areas follows the indications of the PRIU “Regional plan of urgent interventions for the management, control and eradication of African swine fever in farmed pigs and wild boar species”.
“I would like to remind you that, for the areas subject to restrictions due to African swine fever, the provisions of the “Extraordinary Plan” issued by the Extraordinary Commissioner and valid for the period 2023-2028 are valid – concludes Piana – The incentive approved by the Regional Council to support the killing of wild boar heads by bioregulators (specially trained hunters) in the ASF restriction zones responds to the urgent need to provide for the depopulation or reduction of the density of the species for health purposes, which is essential to limit, and possibly avoid , the spread of the epidemic”.
