The naming ceremony of the “Dante Alighieri” square after the priest Don Michele Vomera, parish priest of Melicucco from 1966 to 2003, took place yesterday afternoon in Melicucco.
Present were the parish priest Don Pasquale Galatà, the mayor of Melicucco Francesco Nicolaci, the members of the municipal administration and numerous faithful
Mayor Nicolaci underlined that with this dedication the Administration wants to remember loved ones who have left a mark in the Melicucco community.
“ Don Michele Vomera was a religious point of reference and not only that, for almost fifty years he represented a cornerstone for the life of the entire community, and managed to leave an indelible mark on many generations. With this dedication we would like to honor his memory and make it known to those who did not have this opportunity. Don Michele Vomera, a Priest, a man, a father who dedicated his life to religious, social and above all human commitment. He was a solid guide for the growth and spiritual and cultural formation of our young people.”
Don Giuseppe Galatà recalled that Don Vomera, in addition to being parish priest of Melicucco for 37 years, also served the diocesan Church as Director of the Migrants Office and the Pilgrimage Office, and started the Diocesan Clergy Support Institute, a new experience for the whole Church, acknowledging his qualities and his love for the Bride of Christ.
Don Vomera led the parish without ever getting tired, giving life to groups and movements, bringing the laity to the awareness of being a living Church, he educated minds with the teaching of the Catholic Religion, he followed the young people in the oratory, the only meeting point of the time, transmitting to them the true values of life and leading them to Jesus Christ. He enriched the Church with new priests through his prayer and his testimony.
Don Vomera marked the history of Melicucco and his memory is indelible in the minds and hearts of all those who knew and loved him.
