Several North Korean soldiers were killed or injured by mine explosions. The military was clearing the ground and carrying out operations in the areas close to the inter-Korean border, in the midst of significant strengthening work that Pyongyang is carrying out within the demilitarized zone (DMZ). This was reported by NK News, a Seoul site specialized in covering events in the North, citing an official from the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff, without however specifying when the explosions occurred.
In its border programs that began in April, Pyongyang has strengthened tactical roads and installed minefields and “unidentified structures” that appear to be anti-tank barriers, clearing ground to bolster security along the inter-Korean border. “The North Korean army seems to have overdone its work, despite a series of mine explosions during the creation of designated land in the front area and mine operations,” continued the official quoted anonymously. Among the intentions behind the border strengthening works there is probably also that of preventing the soldiers of the hermit state and residents along the border from defecting to the South.
Border violation: warning shots from Seoul
North Korean soldiers working in the demilitarized zone separating the two Koreas briefly entered the South again before turning back after Seoul’s military fired warning shots. This was reported by the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff, reporting the second border violation by the North in less than two weeks after the similar incident on June 9. The Command, in the Yonhap report, added that the North Korean soldiers had crossed the military demarcation line in the DMZ around 8.30 local time (1.30 in Italy).
