San Giorgio, Wednesday meeting with the writer Marina
Marazza discovering Dante Alighieri’s wife
Appointment at 5pm in the Terzani auditorium
Wednesday 19 June at 5pm in the Tiziano Terzani auditorium of the San Giorgio Library in Pistoia
the meeting with the writer Marina Marazza will take place.
The author, exceptionally in Tuscany for a presentation tour, will be in the library for a
afternoon dedicated to the figure of Dante Alighieri’s wife, entitled “My husband Dante:
monna Gemma Donati tells”, a real journey through time, into a ferocious fourteenth century
splendid of ladies and knights, of duels and factions, of blood and excommunications, which also passes through the
our city.
Gemma, the woman Dante never wrote about even though she was the most important in his entire life, is
the protagonist of Marazza’s novel “Dante’s Wife” (Solferino, 2021, winner of the
Dante’s seal award). A very current and forgotten figure from history brought to light in
pages of accurate historical and linguistic reconstruction, to the surprising discovery of a Dante
private, man, husband, father, very far from the hagiographic icon transmitted by tradition
scholastic and seen from the loving, but often candidly merciless, eyes of the one who was there
his wife throughout his adventurous life.
After this historical novel, the reading group Passeggiate Narrative of the Amici Association
della San Giorgio has read other books by the same author, dedicated to important female figures,
very current but forgotten by history which only remembers the illustrious men who lived alongside them
next door, like Leonardo da Vinci’s mother (“The Shadow of Catherine”, 2019) and “The Two Wives of
Manzoni” of 2022.
«Marina’s writing enchanted us – said Rossella Chietti, president of the Friends of the San
Giorgio – and finally we have the opportunity to meet her. It will be a very afternoon
interesting and compelling, open to all, to learn about her books and these female figures from
discover”.
