Severe bad weather in Brazil, floods in Rio Grande do Sul: Três Coroas underwater

The rains and the floods have hit the region of Vale do Paranhanain Brazilare causing serious disruption, especially in the locality of Tres Coroas (Rio Grande do Sul). Yesterday the Prefecture announced that the level of the Rio Paranhana has reached the alert level for the risk of flooding, reaching 3.50 metres. According to reports from the local Civil Defence, the river flooded in the late afternoon, affecting several neighborhoods of the city.

“The Rio Paranhana overflowed, hitting some neighborhoods and forcing residents to evacuate. We have opened shelters and are waiting for the rain to stop so we can see the water level lower,” declared yesterday during the emergency phase Augusto Dreher, coordinator of the Civil Defense of Três Coroas. At 5pm local time, the total rainfall recorded was 127mm.

“We are asking the ribeirinha population, those who were affected by the November floods, to look for a safe place to take refuge. These preventive measures were adopted due to the considerable increase in rainfall volumes,” declared a firefighter while launching an appeal. “Another concern is flooded roads. To protect vehicles, we ask you not to drive on the streets unless it is strictly necessary. We are currently monitoring rivers and streams, and any changes will be communicated immediately“.
