Antonio Tollardo, son of Silvano and Carolina De Luca, the family who died due to the fire that broke out in the workshop at number 8 of via Fra Galagario in Milan on the afternoon of Friday 14 June, would have tried to save mum and dad. The firefighters found them on the ground in the corridor next to each other with their faces blackened by soot.

In all likelihood the Tollardo family – who lived on the third floor of the building in via Fra Galgario – was caught by surprise by the fire and the dense column of black smoke. Not only that, the three may have thought it would be safer to stay indoors.

In the meantime, detectives and investigators are working to reconstruct what happened. Investigators want to understand what triggered the flames, but above all to understand why the fire spread so quickly and with so much violence.

In the last few hours the fire investigation unit (Nia) in via Messina received the delegation from the prosecutor’s office to reconstruct the dynamics of the facts. The specialized personnel of the fire brigade were activated shortly after the fire, but with the start of the new week the investigations will continue unabated. “The findings in the next few days will be fundamental to establish what caused the fire in the business on the ground floor and what may have contributed to such widespread involvement of the building, in particular the unit where people lost their lives, ” they announced from via Messina.

In the meantime, the prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation into the crimes of murder and negligent fire. Fabrizio Antonio Ghiani, the 39-year-old owner of the workshop opened by his family in 1981, was included in the register of suspects. This is also an act to guarantee him, to allow him to appoint a lawyer and a consultant to follow future investigations . Those who know Antonio have described him as a “hard worker” and a “serious, competent professional”. His workshop – a small business with just one permanent employee and a circle of trusted customers in the area – is one of the many workshops that are located within the city limits on the ground floor of buildings. In close contact with those who live on the upper floors.

Also in the next few days the autopsy will be carried out on the bodies of Carolina De Luca, Silvano Tollardo and their son Antonio. The investigation will be ordered on Monday by prosecutor Enrico Pavone, on duty at the time of the tragedy.
