Pope Francis deplores “the clashes and massacres” of civilians in the east of Democratic Republic of Congo and calls on “national authorities and international communities to do everything possible to put an end to the violence”. Nearly 150 people have died since the beginning of June in eastern Congo in killings attributed to the ADF group, affiliated to the jihadist organization Islamic State, including 42 during a massacre that took place overnight between Wednesday and Thursday, according to data from local authorities and of civil society. Pope Francis expressed his sorrow at the violence and urged all parties involved to seek a peaceful solution to stop the bloodshed and protect innocent civilians.
