Matija Sarkic: a fatal illness
According to the ‘Rtcg’ portal, Sarkic would have had an illness. The friends present immediately called for help, but unfortunately every attempt to revive him was useless. The death occurred around 6.30 in the morning. The police also intervened on the scene to investigate the incident.
Montenegrin state television RTCG reports that Sarkic went for an evening walk with friends, what then had dinner in a restaurant and so be it returned to his apartment early. He is believed to have told friends he felt unwell after waking up at around 6am this morning and they called an ambulance but it was too late.

Millwall expressed their condolences in a statement: “Everyone at the club sends their love and condolences to Matija’s family and friends at this immensely sad time.” The company also asked for Matija’s privacy to be respected, stating that he will not make further comments on the matter.
“Terrible news RIP Matij,” one fan commented. Another added: “Absolutely shocking news, and so young, what a huge loss for his family and the football family.” A third posted: “RIP Matija from a Birmingham fan. Great goalkeeper, great guy. What terrible news.”

Just ten days ago, Sarkic was the best on the pitch in Montenegro’s 2-0 friendly defeat against Belgium, thanks to an extraordinary performance that he had included nine saves. He should have returned to the field with the national team on 6 September 2024 for the Nations League match against Iceland.

Matija Sarkic’s career
Born in Grimsby, England, Sarkic began his career in Anderlecht’s youth team when his father, a diplomat, moved to Brussels. In 2015, at the age of 18, he was signed by Aston Villa. Since then, he has played for various teams in England, finishing his final season at Millwall, where he had arrived from Wolverhampton.
