Mourning in Teramo and Castel Castagna: Maria Pia De Antonis Michelangelo died at the age of 17. The death occurred on May 7 in Caracas, Venezuela. Due to the very complex documentation, the transport of the body to Italy has only taken place now: with the return to Abruzzo the funeral will be able to take place.
The young woman was killed by an illness she had been fighting for months. Her parents, originally from the hamlet of Scapriano in Teramo and well known in the city, have been going back and forth between Abruzzo and the Latin American country for years for work reasons. As soon as her daughter’s illness was discovered, her family stopped at the hospital in the provincial capital to have her treated, with the intention of continuing the treatment overseas if there were improvements. And so it was: the improvements arrived and then the family started again.
Unfortunately, the joy of the moment turned into pain due to a relapse that quickly took the seventeen-year-old from her life. At that point her parents would have liked to immediately bring the remains back to Italy for the funeral and burial, but some bureaucratic obstacles delayed her return and funeral.
Yesterday afternoon the coffin arrived in Ciampino and was then taken to Carlo Petrucci’s funeral home, where many – there were many friends from school – went to say their final goodbyes and join in the family’s grief. The news immediately spread on social networks.
There were many messages of condolence to the family. «There are no words that can console the family. Rip baby», writes Isa. Silvana comments: «There really are no words to describe the pain a parent can feel when he loses a daughter so young. I really feel sorry for them, who I know well and are a loving and affectionate mother and father. May the earth be light on you, little angel, watch over your loved ones from above.” And Barbara again: «So young. He watches over your mother and gives her the strength and courage to carry on.” The community of Castel Castagna where the family had purchased a new house a few years ago is also in mourning. Maria Pia leaves her mother Ana Maria, her father Francesco, her brothers Gianmarco and Gianfranco. The funeral will take place this afternoon at 4pm in the Santa Maria di Ronzano church in the municipality of Castel Castagna.
