serious mother and child, shock in Sassocorvaro

SASSOCORVARO – The dramatic accident that occurred a few days ago in Lavagna on the Ligurian coast of Levante, where a car carrying a family of five people ended up in the waters of the port: father, mother and three children, also had an impact in Sassocorvaro. The woman’s condition is still very serious but what is most worrying is her youngest son, aged 7, who is still hospitalized at the Gaslini hospital in Genoa. Husband and wife, Massimiliano and Fabiola Paoli, are both originally from Sassocorvaro although they have lived and worked in Milan in the banking sector for some time.

The accident occurred last Saturday, June 8, in the late afternoon, when, for reasons yet to be clarified, the family’s car ended up in the sea, in the tourist port of Lavagna, in the Ligurian east. A week later, the conditions of the 45-year-old mother and her child remain serious. The little boy is in intensive care and the doctors have described the situation as “desperate”. Mother and son, once brought to safety, were resuscitated because they were in cardiac arrest and then taken to the hospitals of Lavagna and Genoa. Her mother is also still in the intensive care unit of the Ligurian town: her condition is stationary and the prognosis remains reserved. It is not yet clear how the accident could have happened: whether it was a wrong maneuver or a mechanical failure.

The family had taken a trip from Milan to Lavagna spending the day at the seaside with friends. At the time of the accident she had left to return home in the evening. Based on what was reconstructed and reported by the local media, the alarm was immediate and a diver together with two mooring men intervened immediately to free the five passengers on board the car which was sinking and who risked remaining prisoners in the interior of the passenger compartment.

The father and two children, a 16-year-old girl and a 13-year-old boy, managed to get out independently but the mother and her 6-year-old son remained trapped under the water, stuck in the passenger compartment, for several minutes before being Set Yourself Free. Once rescued, the father and the other two children were also hospitalized. Fortunately, their conditions were not serious: first the two children were discharged and entrusted to their grandparents, then, the following day, their father. All three are followed by the psychological support team. The news hit Sassocorvaro, where several relatives of the family live, with all its burden of pain and disbelief. From the hospital of the seaside resort on the Riviera di Levante, yesterday’s bulletin reported for the mother: “Stabilization of the cardiovascular functions and control of hypothermia have been achieved. The patient is currently under deep sedation to contain post-anoxic brain damage and requires organ support such as mechanical ventilation.”

At the Gaslini Hospital the little boy is still in a medically induced coma. In the meantime, the car that ended up in the sea was recovered by the firefighters and the harbor master’s office for the necessary investigations and was seized pending the necessary technical findings.
