«They were human torches that ran away»

“They ran into the square and were unrecognizable, they were human torches who screamed and asked for help”, is the testimony of some neighbors who witnessed thefire occurred at Victory (Ragusa), on the night of Wednesday 12 June. A boy, of Tunisian origin, set fire to his house, inside which there were his father, mother and two sisters. There was nothing that could be done for the elderly lady and one of the two sisters, they died on Thursday 13 June. They had burns over 90 percent of their bodies. The father and the other sister, however, are still in serious conditions in the hospitals of John Paul II in Ragusa and Cannizzaro in Catania.

The testimonies

All the neighbors witnessed the tragedy that occurred on Wednesday night. Several people were woken up around 2.30 am by inhuman screams. As soon as they went out into the street, they saw the thirty-year-old following the two sisters, engulfed in flames. The 30-year-old had a rudimentary flashlight in his hand to try to hit them again. He seemed to want to add more fire to those flames that were now devouring them.

«Some people took to the street with blankets to wrap them up and put out the flames – said a woman who witnessed the scene – a blanket then remained attached to the body. Some young Tunisians bravely entered the house amidst the flames and pulled out her mother, who was now unrecognizable, and placed her on the ground. Help arrived almost immediately. But none of them were saved from the flames.”

The 30-year-old had also slashed the tires of the family cars. Sameh, the older sister, had purchased a second car with the money she earned from her job. She was an employee of a large agricultural company in the area, she worked in the grafting room. She was known and respected, a special relationship with her mother and sisters. The family Zaouali he had lived there for a long time. «They were special, serene, calm people – the neighbors still say – everyone respected them, their daughters had studied, with excellent results. One of the sisters was attending university, the other would be graduating from high school in a few days. But we knew there were problems. The only boy in the family had had some difficult years. As a child he was like the others, a lively and smiling child who played with others. Then something changed. Sometimes he was under house arrest. He often shouted and mistreated his family, he was violent. They had reported him several times, he was of no use, he wasn’t enough.”

The arrest

After the tragedy the man moved away. He was found a few hours later thanks to the images of the cameras in the area and the story of those who had seen him, who reported where he was headed. It seems that he was planning to escape, to leave Vittoria. Aware of the fact that he would have no escape. Taken to the police station he was questioned at length. The arrest was issued in the evening. The charges for him will be very serious: premeditated voluntary homicide aggravated by cruelty and family ties, attempted murder.
