The woman hospitalized in the Guzzardo hospital in Vittoria died due to serious burns suffered in the fire in her home. The woman is the mother (and not the sister) of the man who set the fire, a Tunisian with mental problems who was arrested by the police. Two children, who are believed to be the man’s little brothers, and the woman’s husband were also seriously burned in the fire.
The victim is a 55-year-old Tunisian woman, who died in the Guzzardi hospital in Vittoria due to the burns he suffered. Her 57-year-old husband, also Tunisian, was also seriously burned in the fire at the family home. the two daughters aged 19 and 34 (who are therefore not children as was initially communicated) hospitalized in intensive care in the Cannizzaro hospital in Catania with very serious burns all over their bodies.
The author of the fire is another son of the couple, a 29-year-old young man, who was stopped by the police while wandering in a countryside area. At the moment he is in custody in the offices of the Vittoria police station, he appears to be suffering from mental problems. According to an initial reconstruction by investigators it would have been himat the height of a family argument that occurred around 2.30 am at night, to start the fire. Within a few minutes the flames engulfed the house in Piazza dell’Unità, a few meters from the former Trinità church which gives its name to the neighbourhood.
