Italian double at the European Athletics Championships in Rome in the half marathon. Gold for Yeman Crippa followed by Pietro Riva silver. Italy wins the team gold thanks to the decisive sixth place of the Apulian Pasquale Selvarolo.
Crippa won in 1h01’03” in the 21.097 kilometer race. A new success for the Trentino athlete, multiple Italian record holder, with his second continental title after the one two years ago in the 10,000m on the track. Behind Crippa, an excellent second place for Riva, who took the silver medal in 1h01’04”, outsprinting the German Amanal Petros on the final straight, who finished in 1h01’07” and had to settle for the bronze medal.
Italy also won the team gold thanks to the decisive sixth place of the Apulian Pasquale Selvarolo in 1h01’27”, among the top ten also Eyob Faniel eighth (1h01’29” and Yohanes Chiappinelli tenth (1h01’42”), then 27th Daniele Meucci (1h03’45”).
Historic record for Italy with 13 medals and 7 gold
At the start of the third day, out of the six scheduled, Italy is already at the historic record of 13 medals with 7 gold, 5 silver and 1 bronze, which has never happened in the previous 25 editions of the European Championships from 1934 to today: the maximum was 12 medals and 5 golds in Split in 1990.
