They leave with a bang European Championships in Rome. Yesterday, on the opening day, inside an Olympic stadium renovated specifically for the event, the Italian team wins four medals (two gold and two silver) immediately showing themselves as one of the strongest teams on a continental level. First Antonella Palmisano and then Nadia Battocletti achieved two more than deserved victories in front of the home crowd, who honored them by waving the numerous tricolours.
During the day, numerous shifts also arrived for numerous Italians busy on the track and on the platforms.
Palmisano and Trapletti scored a double in the march
The first gold arrives in the late afternoon in Rome. In fact, as the sun sinks below the horizon, Antonella Palmisano32 year old Olympic gold race walker at the Tokyo Olympics, makes his triumphal entry into the Olimpico ring clearly in the lead.
After having traveled the suggestive route inside the Foro Italico, Palmisano becomes European champion of the 20 kilometer race walk; in the history of the European Championships, Palmisano’s is the third gold for Italy in the women’s race walk. Behind her another Italian, Valentina Trapletti, who improved her time by over a minute and won a great silver which gives Italy a precious double.
Nadia Battocletti: a great triumph
What the thirty-year-old did was sensational Nadia Battocletti on 5000 meters women. Late in the Roman evening and under the eyes of the Italian fans, the Trentino middle-distance runner, after an extraordinary race, launches a rapid sprint towards the end and reaches the finish line clearly first, signing the Italian record and the European championship record. In the same race she earned seventh place for Federica Del Buono from Vicenza.
Sensational silver in the mixed relay
Great result also from the relay 4×400 mixed. The four blue relay runners (Sito, Polinari, Scotti, Mangione), after an extremely exciting race they conquered the silver medal graduating vice champions of Europe with times that have little to envy from the apparently stronger opponents.
The Azzurri qualified for the final yesterday
Also yesterday, several Italian athletes qualified for the finals. The young and talented on the long jump platform Mattia Furlani place a super jump to 8.17 m which sends him straight to the final.
