The eleven corpses recovered yesterday in the Mediterranean Sea from the ship Geo Barents of Doctors Without Borders will be taken in the morning to Lampedusa. The transhipment was authorized by the Interior Ministry. Harsh words from Fulvia Conte, rescue coordinator for Doctors Without Borders on board the ship: “Yesterday the Geo Barents recovered the lifeless bodies of 11 people from the sea, thanks also to the support of Seabird, the Swa Watch aircraft. The bodies had been at sea for many days, victims of a shipwreck about which nothing is known. Victims of political choices on what are the borders of Europe and the lack of safe passages to escape the situation in Libya, which we know very well”.

“Yesterday – continues Conte – while they were recovering the bodies in high state of decomposition, including women, Geo Barents also recovered other people who were on board a dinghy in difficulty. All this is the consequence of a political choice, it is not an emergency we know nothing about, people will always try to find a safe way. There should be legal channels to escape from absolutely non-human situations”, concludes Conte.

The eleven drowned migrants are “victims of political choices, of Europe’s borders and of the lack of safe passages to escape from war, poverty, detention”, the humanitarian worker also states. “It is not an emergency or something unpredictable, there should be legal channels to escape from inhuman situations.”
