He did what perhaps, over the years, he had always done: try to clean up his plot of land. This time however, he was unable to keep the fire at bay, he was unable to govern it. And the flames attacked and killed him. He was a tragedy in Canicattì, in the Firriato district to be precise, where a seventy-six-year-old pensioner lost his life. The rescue services, alerted by a family member of the elderly man, were of no avail. Ferdinando Bentivegna was in fact, unfortunately, already deceased.
The elderly man – according to what was ascertained by the carabinieri of the Canicattì station who, after having rushed to the Firriato district, took care of the reconstruction of the tragedy – was working on his farm this morning. At a certain point he decided, probably as he had already done other times and as all or almost all landowners are wont to do, he decided to eliminate the weeds and brambles that had grown luxuriantly on his land. He started the fire, but at a certain point – both because there was a lot of brushwood and because the flames would have been pushed by some gusts of wind – the seventy-six-year-old was no longer able to manage that fire. Despite his efforts, the fire got out of hand and attacked him.
The SOS was launched by a family member of the Canicatti area, who witnessed the tragedy. When the firefighters and the carabinieri arrived in the Firriato district, unfortunately there was nothing left to do for the seventy-six-year-old: the elderly man had died. The carabinieri at the Canicattì station have reconstructed, and are still at work, all the details of the tragedy.
