From Ostia to Santa Severa, passing through Fregene, the sea is truly “salty”. And it is not a reference to the composition of the waters, albeit clear, of the Roman coast. The “expensive beach umbrella” is making itself felt: effects of the increase in management costs, of the economic crisis, but also of the erosion that “sacrifices” spaces on the beach. A place in the sun can cost up to 7 thousand euros – for the entire season, of course – in Ostia. The costs concern a cabin with hot shower included, two sunbeds and an umbrella from 1 May to 30 September. The rest is all extra. “Unfortunately, like many managers – explains the owner of an establishment on the Lido – we are forced to return portions of the beach eaten up by the storms, taking away space for day-trippers and favoring regular customers.” Increases also on the free beaches of Castel Porziano: the cost of a sunbed has gone – in the space of a single season – from 5 to 7 euros per day.

Weddings, boom in newlyweds on the Roman coast: the most requested locations outside the capital (now too expensive)

NORTH COAST

In Fregene, the adjustments in the factories mainly concern the restaurants: «The increase – explains a manager – in the costs of raw materials has increased the menu dishes by a few euros». It is rare to find a fish-based first course under 18 euros if the table is on the seashore. So on the beach on weekdays sunbeds and umbrellas cost up to 9 euros per day, with further increases on Saturdays and Sundays. In Santa Severa The “expensive umbrella” is not slowing down bookings for now. Spending a day by the sea in some beach facilities in Santa Marinella can cost no less than 50 euros per day. The budget to be allocated is approximately one thousand euros for a monthly subscription. Rates, not exactly for all budgets but which are influenced by various factors. An umbrella and two sunbeds can have very different costs depending on whether you prefer the comfort and services of a private establishment, or whether you are content to frequent an equipped free beach, spending on average 15 to 20 euros per day. But the stretches of coast where you choose to spend your holidays also make a difference. It might seem anachronistic, but the vast beaches of Santa Severa are among the least expensive. A monthly subscription can cost between 600 and 1800 euros (close to 6 thousand for the entire season). Here, a sun lounger that can cost from a minimum of 8 euros to a maximum of 12 euros per day on a free beach in Santa Severa, while in some establishments, to enjoy a place in the shade and a couple of deckchairs you can spend up to 75 euros on holidays.
