Created in 1973, Barefoot Gen is considered a seminal manga which describes the impact of the Second World War on Japan: the story begins in 1945 in Hiroshima, the city where its creator Kenji Nakazawa was born and which was hit by one of the two atomic bombs of the United States, and is loosely based on the experience of Nakazawa as a survivor.
