Crotone: measures for fire prevention and urban decorum begin

The municipal administration of Crotone has adopted a union ordinance which introduces a series of measures for the prevention of fires and the restoration of decorum and safety in private areas and lands.

The objective is to protect citizens from the dangers deriving from forest fires, which have hit the Crotone area hard in recent years.

The ordinance, in force from 15 June to 15 October 2024, is aimed at owners and tenants of different types of areas, including:

  • Agricultural areas
  • Uncultivated land
  • Uncultivated urban green areas
  • Disused industrial areas
  • Respect areas of the aqueducts
  • Construction and road construction sites
  • Condominiums with adjoining appurtenant areas
  • Areas with temporary and permanent outdoor storage

The owners and tenants of these areas are required to:

  • Implement all appropriate measures to prevent the start and spread of fires
  • Provide maintenance of the relevant funds or areas
  • Keep them free of debris, waste, obsolete machinery, clippings and prunings

The ordinance also refers to Regional Law no. 51 of 22 December 2017, which defines a series of obligations for the prevention of fires and the protection of urban decorum. These obligations include:

  • Create fire protection zones
  • Create farm roads to access the land
  • Report the presence of wells, cisterns and troughs
  • Maintain erosion defense works efficiently
  • Maintain tall trees
  • Prune hedges and shrubs
  • Remove brush and waste

In addition to preventing fires, the measures adopted by the municipal administration also aim to:

  • Protect the environment
  • Guarantee urban decorum
  • Safeguard public health

The municipal administration has launched an information and awareness campaign to inform citizens about the contents of the ordinance and their obligations.

Respect the rules contained in the union ordinance and in Regional Law n. 51 of 22 December 2017 is fundamental for the prevention of fires and the protection of urban decorum.

The municipal administration invites all citizens to collaborate to achieve these objectives.
