Sergio Miglioranza, the 72-year-old who on 10 June 2020 set fire to his house in via Feltrina in Castagnole, burning his 68-year-old wife Franca Fava and her friend (and carer) Fiorella Sandre, 74, was sentenced to life imprisonment. years. The man is now 72 years old and was sentenced to life imprisonment after 4 years of legal proceedings. “Finally after 4 years I have the satisfaction of seeing him convicted for my mother and her friend – explained Martina Sandre, daughter of the victim’s 74-year-old friend -. I heard from her on the afternoon of June 10th and it seemed like there were no problems, I never had any signs of anything wrong.”

The two victims of the fire

According to the magistrates, the motive would have been of an economic nature: Miglioranza wanted to collect the home insurance premium by covering the loss of that large sum of money that he and his wife would have received as compensation for the death of their son and which 10 years ago previously the 72-year-old had lost the entire amount (around 200 thousand euros) after having lent it to an acquaintance who then never returned it to him. Hence the decision to set fire to the house to pocket the insurance money by placing gas cylinders and barring the exit door of the laundry room located on the ground floor, right where the two victims used to sleep.

According to what has been reconstructed, the two died while looking for a way out to escape the flames. The 72-year-old was on trial for double premeditated murder and insurance fraud. The man was also sentenced to daytime solitary confinement for a period of one year. Martina Sandre burst into liberating tears upon reading the sentence. The Court of Appeal had awarded her a provisional amount of 150 thousand euros while 100 thousand will go to her son, Fiorella’s nephew.

Miglioranza would have taken 17 minutes to implement the diabolical plan. The elderly man would have prepared 11 trigger points, 9 outside the house and two inside the first floor using petrol and fire starters, then he would have lit everything. The fire would have enveloped first the ground floor and then the entire rest of the house.
