The SIAP National Secretariat and the Provincial Secretariat of Genoa organized this morning at the Circolo CAP in via Albertazzi in Genoa Sampierdarena, a conference entitled “Liguria: Gateway to Europe in the Mediterranean. Police activities and regional anti-mafia legislation for the prevention and fight against mafia expansion”.

The objective of the conference was to explore the role of Liguria as a border region in the fight against the mafia, analyzing the strategies implemented by the police and the role of regional anti-mafia legislation.

“The situation is serious, especially regarding the presence of the ‘Ndrangheta, rooted in all four provinces. 39.4% of the cocaine seized in Italy enters our ports – He says Roberto Centi, President of the Liguria Region Anti-Mafia Commission -. The four provinces are infiltrated, both in terms of earthmoving and the management of illegal immigration in France, and in terms of procurement. Now we are faced with a great challenge which is to manage PNRR contracts well.”

“In the province of Savona there is maximum attention on the mafia, a phenomenon that obviously needs to be monitored – he claims Alessandra Simone, Police Commissioner of Savona -, also because we have two ports, that of Savona and that of Vado Ligure, in which, following international drug trafficking, containers containing kilos and kilos of cocaine were often found and seized”.

We must beat the removal, the underestimation, the relativization as if the mafia were an evil that in some way must be accepted and must be lived with – he declares Andrea Orlando, Member of the Chamber of Deputies of the Italian Republic -. The mafia can be defeated: it is there even when it cannot be seen, when it is silent. Identifying all the symptoms that can demonstrate its presence and reacting and bringing this discussion to all the realities that must be able to react, I think is the first thing.”

“It’s the fight, it’s a daily conflict over organizations that are clandestine, so we’re not talking about common crime – he claims Stefano Padovano, Criminologist – University of Genoa and Catholic University of Milan -. We are talking about organized crime, where the mafia origin often cannot be demonstrated. The strength of these organizations lies in the fact that they have found extraordinary support, even here in Northern Italy.”

“As associations that deal with social anti-mafia such as Libera, we believe that pressure at the level of civil society is fundamental today to ensure that the mafia phenomena present in our territory are impacted not only by the correct action of the police, of the judiciaryAndrea Macario, Contact person for Libera Liguria -, but also from a civil movement of indignation for what the phenomena in our territory are”.

“It is certainly a deep-rooted phenomenon, the problem is that little has been said about it and it is one of the objectives of our debate, that of raising ever more awareness on the topic” he stated Roberto Traverso, SIAP National Secretary.
