Opaque electricity and gas bills: operators targeted by the Antitrust

The AGCM (Competition and Market Authority) is carefully monitoring the market in view of the farewell to greater protection for domestic electricity supply users, sweeping away the commercial proposals that fill the Web.

Well, the offers advertised online by 13 companies, in particular, were found not complying to consumer protection regulations.

Energy and gas bills are not very transparent

Among the managers that have come under the authority’s lens are Illumia, Jen Energia, Dolomiti Energia, Axpo Italia (Pulsee Luce & Gas), Ajo’ Energia, Acea Energia, Ecom-Energu Comune, Agsm Aim Energia, Hera Comm, Wekiwi, Omnia Energia, Semplice Gas & Luce and E.On Energia.

In anticipation of end of the protected marketthe Authority conducted a careful monitoring of the commercial offers of the main electricity and gas sales companies in the free market.

The objective was to verify the transparency and completeness of promotional information provided to consumers, both in terms of economic and commercial components claim environmental. During this control activity, the AGCM detected several critical issues.

Many offers did not clearly include all charges that make up the price of energy, potentially misleading consumers about the actual cost of the service. Furthermore, some slogans used in promotions did not provide detailed and certified information on the ecological actions carried out by the companies.

At the end of the monitoring, the Authority therefore invited the companies involved to improve their promotional information. The directions main:

  • clarity of costs – companies must specify all the charges that make up the cost of energy, to make the final price transparent to consumers.
  • certification of claim environmental – that information regarding environmental benefits must be accompanied by certifications and attestations that can be easily consulted by consumers.

Transition to the free energy market under control

These interventions are inserted in a context of continued attention of the AGCM towards the electricity and gas market. The President of the Authority, Roberto Rustichelli, reiterated this commitment during a hearing at the Chamber’s Productive Activities Commission, which took place on Tuesday 28 May.

Rustichelli underlined the importance of ensuring transparency and correctness In the ride from the protected market to free market of electricity, scheduled for 1 July 2024 for residential users, involving millions of Italian consumers.
