“June 10, 1859”, meeting June 5

On Wednesday 5 June at 6.00 pm at the PalabancaEventi (formerly Palazzo Galli) a meeting will be held “10 June 1859 – When the Austrians left Piacenza forever”. During the conversation the speakers will recall the facts, places and characters linked to the definitive evacuation of the Austrians from Piacenza from our city. Speakers: Manrico Bissi, Andrea Bergonzi. Robert Gionelli moderates the meeting. The meeting will be preceded by greetings from president Danilo Anelli. Afterwards there will be a short visit to Piazza Cavalli, to observe the stone on which the date 10 June 1859 is engraved.

The process of National Unification began in the spring of 1859, when the Second War of Independence broke out when the war turned in favor of the Italian-French side, and the Austrian forces had to retreat, clearing Lombardy. In this context, shortly afterwards the Austrian “white jackets” stationed in Piacenza were evacuated on 10 June 1859, exactly 165 years ago. The final departure of the enemy is commemorated by two inscriptions, placed respectively in the pavement of Piazza de’ Cavalli and on the façade of Porta Borghetto, through which the last retreating Austrian soldiers passed.
