Jorge Martin starts from pole in today’s race at Mugello

After surprising everyone in yesterday’s qualifying, today the Spanish current world championship leader Jorge Martin will start from pole position in the MotoGP race at Mugello. The standard bearer of the Pramac team will therefore want to make up for the fall that prematurely put him out of action in yesterday afternoon’s Sprint Race and above all return to widening the margin in the standings over his closest pursuer, that is, Pecco Bagnaia who closed the gap yesterday with the victory in the mini-race but will have to start from the second row today due to a penalty to be served.

The 2024 MotoGP rider rankings before today’s race at Mugello

Thanks to the victory in yesterday’s Sprint, Pecco Bagnaia has nibbled away important points in the general classification from the leader Jorge Martin who crashed. Here is the new 2024 MotoGP rider ranking before the Italian GP race taking place today at Mugello:

  1. Jorge Martin (Ducati) 155
  2. Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati) 128
  3. Marc Marquez (Ducati) 123
  4. Enea Bastianini (Ducati) 94
  5. Maverick Vinales (Aprilia) 92

Because Bagnaia starts 5th on the grid today in the Mugello race

Despite the second place achieved in yesterday’s qualifying, Ducati rider Pecco Bagnaia will start from fifth place on the starting grid in today’s MotoGP race at Mugello. The reason is a three-place penalty imposed on him by the FIM Commissioners for an impediment against Alex Marquez during Friday’s Pre-Qualifying which saw the two make sparks on and off the track.

Ducati rider Pecco Bagnaia triumphed yesterday in the Sprint Race of the MotoGP Italian GP, leading Saturday’s mini-race from the start while his rival Jorge Martin crashed a few laps from the end (as did the other standard bearer of the official Ducati team Enea Bastianini who was fighting with him for the podium). Behind the Piedmontese centaur was Marc Marquez who, with the GP23 of the Gresini team, preceded his younger compatriot Pedro Acosta to the finish line.

The map of the Mugello circuit on which the 2024 MotoGP Italian GP race will take place today (source Brembo)

Hosting the 2024 MotoGP Italian GP race scheduled today is the historic Mugello circuit located in the municipality of Scarperia and San Piero, in the province of Florence. The Tuscan track is 5.2 kilometers long, with 9 right-hand corners, 6 left-hand ones and the longest straight measuring 1141 metres, which today the drivers will have to cover for 23 laps.

According to the technicians of Brembo, supplier of the braking systems of all the MotoGP riders, the Mugello circuit is an averagely demanding track for the brakes with three of the fifteen corners which have been classified as very demanding. The hardest braking will undoubtedly be the one at San Donato (turn 1) where the larger displacement bikes will reach over 335 km/h (they could even exceed 360 km/h) and will have to decelerate to enter the corner at a speed of approximately 95 km/h.

The track record during a MotoGP race belongs to Pecco Bagnaia who in the Italian GP two years ago completed an entire lap of the Mugello track in 1:46.588.
